Chipotles are smoked jalapenos. For centuries this chilli pepper has been used in Mexican cuisine to enhance the depth of flavour of many dishes and is also known for its many medicinal properties as it is packed full of vitamin A, C, iron, magnesium and potassium. Thankfully, due to the progress of technology, communication and transport, chipotles are now widely available to the European market.

Fresh jalapenos are traditionally smoked over a wood fire when they are transitioning from green to red at the end of the growing season although modern methods also involve the use of gas dryers or other liquid smoke but the results are not as tasty as when jalapenos are smoked over a wood fire.

At the Devil's Garden we have many chilli produce containing chipotle so we thought we would give you an idea of what is available to you at the click of a button:

Hot Sauces are widely made using the chipotle pepper to bring in a smoky flavour in the background but we do love hot sauces that are using the chipotle as a main ingredient such as Cambridge Chilli Farm's Smoky Chipotle Hot Sauce. Thanks to a clever blend of spices this hot sauce is reminiscent of a good barbecue sauce and has a consistency just right for pouring over a piece of bread for a delicious mid-afternoon snack.

Dave's Roasted Red Pepper & Chipotle Hot Sauce is a hot sauce that makes us salivate everytime we think about it as the smokiness of chipotles is combined with fireroasted sweet red peppers and just a touch of hananeros to crank the heat up a notch.

Another hot sauce combining chillies is Hot Headz's Naga & Chipotle Hot Sauce. Now this is just the best of both worlds really as the heat from the naga and the smokiness of the chipotle blend in seamlessly (along with a touch of chilli extract) so for the price of one bottle of hot sauce, you get two of the most loved chilli peppers out there.

It is hard to be objective sometimes as we do try so many hot sauces but if we had to pick just one everyday hot sauce that goes with pretty much anything then we have to admit that our favourite would be Chilli Pepper Pete's Dragon Hunter. The blend of sweet & sour tamarind (another word for chipotle) coupled with the medium sharpness of the beloved smoked jalapeno has been obsessively perfected over the years by Chilli Pepper Pete and is one of their most popular products.

A hot sauce that is great to use as a dip is Blair's Heat Chipotle Slam which comes in a practical and reusable flask bottle. An explosive mix of fresh garlic and herbs, red and orange habaneros as well as Chipotle of course make a scrumptious sauce to have time and time again. For added flavour, why not try Blair's Death Rain Chipotle Crisps? These are not for the faint-hearted heat-wise but the taste is so addictive that you just might find yourself licking the bottom of the bag!

Another great snack to use and abuse is Fired Up Foods Smokin' Chipotle Chipnuts. These are roasted peanuts encased in a deeply satisfying crunchy potato shell. Although not as spicy as Blair's Chipotle Crisps, these are just great to share with beginners and have on offer at parties. Your guests will just love you for these!
